Commentary
Ah, there's nothing better than a chance match-up with old friends. f1reburn, also known as
Paul
, was matched against me in my second quick match of the night, to my surprise and delight.
Here it was - me, playing on my supposedly experimental Allied nick, versus an opponent who has played competently with the Allies for years. Surely Paul would triumph, using all his hard gained experience? Unfortunately for him, I took control from the offset - securing a well deserved victory.
I started in the top right, quickly sending an engineer to the derricks so as I could build my refinery off them without delay. My 4 dogs, rather annoyingly, allowed one of Paul's to sneak through. I built a pillbox by my MCV to kill it, quickly selling it once it had achieved its purpose.
This meant that most of my base had been unscouted. I know it was only a matter of time until a rocketeer came however - so I busied myself building plenty of grizzlies and going for my AFC pretty quickly. I went straight for a few rocketeers and eagles. All was dead even at this point - we both had all our derricks and I my airport.
I decided to invest in a naval yard early doors - hoping a quick aegis cruiser would negate Paul's air units (of which there were bound to be quite a few). He had built quite a few rocketeers and had also started on the eagles - but I was 1 eagle ahead. This was important - for he who acts first in Korea V Korea will often be the victor. I made a paradrop in Paul's derricks to draw away attention from my incoming Black Eagles - he was prepared to be fair to him, I believe there were 2 patriots. However, my Black Eagles came around the side and destroyed his AFC - which meant that all three of his planes (totalling 3600 credits) were instantly destroyed. Mine escaped with only minor damage.
Paul tried to retaliate by sending a group of rocketeers North - my Aegis cruiser picked some of them off. Meanwhile, a small naval war was ensuing - however I was always on top of this, able to pick off his destroyers with a combination of rocketeers, eagles and my own destroyers.
With the tide turning clearly in my favour, Paul made an ambitious attack with his tank group - which I saw somewhat belatedly. He perhaps had a slight advantage in numbers, but was put on the back foot when I responded in like with my black eagles as back-up.
At this point, with defeat pretty imminent, Paul chose to bemoan my slightly old laptop, quitting the game. Blaming ones lacklustre performance on lag is all very well and good, but it certainly has nothing to do with inept tactical decisions. He who acts first wins in such battles - my foray into the sea early on, combined with my quick AFC coup, helped assure a victory that will be fondly remembered for some time.
28th of November 2005, the day Rob beat Spud with Allies. On a proper map.
