Nuke Reactor recreated in GMax
One of Renegade's biggest let downs was it's graphical impotence. No amount of advertising, publicity or bribery could disguise the fact that visually, it was about as appealing as syphilis. Despite this however, the classical "Other side of the coin" can also be seen. G-Max does not have the shimmering beauty of Quake III, nor the raw efficiency of Unreal, yet what it can boast is a tremendous potential for the modders who live among us. G-Max has the advantage of having a rolling hill sized learning curve, compared with the sheer rock face of it's competitors: A major boost to mod makers.

These people are the un-sung heroes of our society; responsible for boosting sales of games all over the globe, expanding games beyond even their developers vision, but most importantly, they give us more enjoyment for our pounds. (They'll be no talk of the ÔéČuro here: Keep the pound!)



The Tesla Coil

Before this becomes too tangential and irrelevant, I'll get to the point. Since the release of the Renegade software development kit, an array of mods and modders have come out into the open. What has struck me about this is how common the idea of recreating the Red Alert 2 environment has been: The images show just how successful these people are being, yet, amidst this ocean of talent and enthusiasm, a central establishment of a Red Alert 2 mod has been shipwrecked.

Modifications are simply too difficult for any one person to do on their own. Despite what lying people will tell you at educational establishments across the country; you cannot be an expert at everything. But what ho! Does this mean a fully fledged Red Alert 2 total conversion will never the see the light of day? I think, and hope, the answer to this will be a resounding no. The community as a whole needs to galvanise behind protective mod-makers and encourage them to get together in one production. Everyone understands how modders want to protect their work, but ultimately, it is better to contribute to a successful mod than watch your own die in the archives of the fansites.



Soviet Refinery

Just as one player doesn't make a team, one anecdote doesn't make an article: Teamwork is utterly critically critical if this idea of a Red Alert 2 total conversion is ever to be completed. I enjoy looking at neatly rendered models as much as the next geek, but what about Coding? What about mapping? What about skins? We are lucky to have such a gifted community: it would be a travesty to see this flushed away into the sewage works beside the likes of the Deus Ex mods who thought they could do it all.



Allied Barracks

To even recreate half of the Red Alert 2 units would be a great achievement for any mod-team, and be remembered throughout the community. A single model of a Red Alert 2 building will gain nothing more than a contented: "That's good". Although short, this article has a purpose: To survive and flourish: The huge numbers of talented artists, modelers and coders must unite into a single mod. And remember: A mod is for life, not just for Christmas.
